Our favourite apps, websites and trip planning tools when renting an EV | Avis Car Rental

Renting an EV? Then you’ll want to know where the charging stations are before you drive out of the car park. The good news is that there are plenty of apps and websites that will help you locate charging stations throughout Australia (and around the world). And don’t forget, there’s always good old Google and Apple Maps, which can both help you locate nearby charging stations.

When planning your route, remember to check the EV charging stations are compatible with your EV model. If you’re planning a road trip, we recommend planning your charging stops around breaks and sightseeing, and using apps and websites that provide real-time updates on charging station availability to avoid any hold-ups to your holiday.

We’ve rounded up some of the best EV charging station apps, websites and trip planning tools to use when renting an EV.

EV charging station apps and websites

Before you hit the road, make sure you download at least one of these apps, so you can always find a charging station when you need one.

Plugshare

Plugshare has to be one of our favourite apps for locating EV charging stations, whether you’re in Australia or overseas. The app bills itself as being the most comprehensive map of charging stations in the world. You can see real-time availability updates on charging stations and use the journey planner to plan an itinerary with stops to charge along the way.

ChargeFox

Australia's largest EV charging network, ChargeFox has charge stations throughout the country, including major shopping centres, supermarkets and local council locations. ChargeFox’s network ranges from AC 5kW charges to fast DC 50kW chargers to super-fast DC 350 – 475kW chargers. Better yet? All Charge Fox stations are powered by 100% renewable energy, so you’re reducing your carbon footprint even further.

EVie Networks

Another Australian provider of charging stations, Evie Networks has fast DC 50kW and super-fast 350kW charging stations across Australia. Evie also provides 24/7 support and updates the status of its chargers.

EVroam

Heading across the Tasman? EVRoam is a live map of New Zealand’s public electric vehicle chargers. It provides information in real time about charge points throughout the country, including whether the charger is available to use or in use.

EV route planning apps and websites

If you’re planning a longer journey, we recommend planning your route in advance using one of these EV route planning apps and websites, and identifying charging stations along the way. And always note a backup charging station on your route, just in case.

Tesla “Go Anywhere”

If you’re renting one of Avis’ sophisticated Tesla Model Ys, why not try the brand’s own “Go Anywhere” route planner? What we love about Go Anywhere is it's designed specifically for Tesla drivers, so you can plan routes and charging stops based on Tesla’s Supercharger network. If you enter your vehicle’s model, it will even tell you how long you’ll need to spend charging your car at each of Tesla’s charging stations.

A Better Routeplanner

A Better Routeplanner makes planning any drive in an EV a breeze. All you need to do is enter your departure location and destination, and it will plan your entire route for you, including charge stops along the way. One of our favourite features is the extra information it provides on each charging station, like whether there are toilets, playgrounds and dog-friendly areas nearby. You can use A Better Routeplanner on your desktop, or download the app.

Electric Vehicle Council

The Electric Vehicle Council doesn’t just have a map of Australia’s EV charging stations, it also has loads of information on the different types of chargers,  a complete list of all the EV charging providers in the country, emissions calculators, and more.

EV Hotels

Looking for hotels with EV chargers? Look no further. The EV Hotels app helps you locate hotels around the world with EV chargers, as well as public charging stations. You can filter hotels based on hotel brands, types of charger plugs, and network memberships. It’s a must-have, no matter where you’re heading.
